A forgotten terroir…

Ság hill is a butte in the eastern part of Vas county in Kemenesalja. It rises 279 meters above Celldömölk. It forms a wine region alongside with Somló and Kis-somlyó. The local written memory, the “Laws of Ság Hill” is one of the country’s oldest collection of laws related to viticulture in Hungarian (18th century).

Mining on the mountain dates back to the 20th century. The Sághegyi Bazaltbánya Rt. was established in 1909. Large-scale production started in 1911. The joint-stock company was nationalized after the war and the mining continued until 1957, when the rock material ran out. In total about 17 million tons of stone were extracted, radically changing the former form of the Ság: today’s surface, dotted with barren ditches and internal mine yards, only evokes the once majestic butte.

Estate

``I am the first on the market from Ság hill. We currently cultivate on three and a half hectares. We renovated the aging vines between 2006 and 2008. We are planning to expand and transform our selection with local varieties from Somló: juhfark, csomorika and sárfehér. In addition to making varietal wines, for my own entertainment sometimes I try out different blends. All members of the family take their part in the daily work.``
